We review recent results on the metastable behavior of continuous-time Markov chains derived through the characterization of Markov chains as unique solutions of martingale problems.
Lectures are based on the article Metastable Markov chains avaliable at arXiv:1807.04144
We first review the potential theory of continuous-time Markov chains and present the Dirichlet and the Thomson principles for the capacity.
In the next lectures we present a general approach to derive the metastable behavior of Markov chains and apply this method in the context of statistical mechanics models.
